Youth in Mongolia launched the new Sustainable Development Goals

With the theme “New Goals. New power. New technology,” the second annual Social Good Summit Mongolia was held on September 26, 2015 at IT Park in Ulaanbaatar. Interactive sessions, speakers and presentations by and for young people explored how youth in Mongolia can contribute to the achievement of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using innovation, technology and new media. More than 150 young women and men discussed and engaged with three main topics: Health; Environment; and Education and Opportunities.

Celebrating the International Youth Day 2015 (12 August) and Youth Month in Mongolia, UN Volunteers (UNV) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Mongolia, in cooperation with UN Youth Advisory Panel (UNYAP), carried out an online photo and video contest called “Youth4Mongolia.” The contest, which lasted between 29 July and 25 August 2015, asked the Mongolian youth with two questions: “How are you contributing to Mongolia’s development? What can young people do for better Mongolia?”

Today, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), Network of Mongolia Volunteer Organizations (NMVO) and Mongolian Red Cross Society (MRCS), Mongolian Youth Federation (MYF) jointly organized a National Consultation Workshop on Volunteerism in the UN House, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The Workshop brought together participants from the government, civil society, volunteering organizations and private sector partners.

In view of the World Environment Day, the 2015 competition on the best environmental media products was organized by “Green World” Environmental Journalism Club of the Press Institute of Mongolia in cooperation with UNDP Mongolia. UNDP supported the competition through its two projects implemented jointly with the Ministry of Environment, Green Development and Tourism: “Ecosystem Based Adaptation Approach to Maintaining Water Security in Critical Water Catchments in Mongolia” and “Mongolia’s Network of Managed Resources Protected Areas”.

Mongolia’s first report assessing the challenges for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities reveals they still face discrimination despite significant government policy changes that protect their rights. There is still societal homophobia and transphobia and LGBT people encounter social stigma and even violence in various settings such as families, employment, health care and public areas.
