Mongolia is a nation of nomads. Yet, it is now more urbanized than many parts of Asia. More than two-thirds of Mongolians live in cities. The biggest being Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan and Erdenet. Close to half of the country’s entire population lives in a single city: Ulaanbaatar.

It is my great pleasure and privilege to join you today to sign this new project between the State Great Hural and the United Nations Development Programme on ‘Strengthening Representative Bodies in Mongolia’. This USD 3.8 million initiative is funded with support from the Swiss Development Cooperation Agency (SDC) and UNDP. It is a follow-up to an earlier trilateral engagement of SDC and UNDP with the Secretariat of the State Great Hural on ‘Strengthening the Capacities of Local Self Governing Bodies’, which was implemented during the term of the previous Parliament.

In 2008, for the first time in human history, the world population living in cities exceeded that of people living in the country side. The Asia Pacific region is home to half the world’s urban population. Eleven of the largest 20 cities in the world are located in Asia.

Welcome to the launch of the sixth Mongolia National Human Development Report, Building a Better Tomorrow: Including Youth in the Development of Mongolia. Since the introduction of the concept in the first Human Development Report in 1990, human development has been about expanding the richness of human life, rather than simply the richness of economies. This idea focuses on people, and explores the opportunities people have to live the lives they choose.

It is a great pleasure to be here to sign this new project titled “Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions in the Construction Sector in Mongolia”. This initiative is supported by the Global Environment Facility with a budget of USD 1.37m spanning over a period of over 3 years. It aims to develop and incentivize the introduction of ecological, low emission approaches in the construction sector of Mongolia.

It is a great pleasure to be with you today to sign the new United Nations Development Assistance Framework which will guide the work of the UN in Mongolia in the coming 5 years, 2017-2021. This UNDAF is the result of a year of intensive consultations between the Government and the UN and its signature comes at an opportune moment. 2016 marks the first year of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals as a global call-to-action to rid the world of poverty, make sure that all people benefit from development and stop environmental degradation and climate change.
